~ They Two & Another ~
Alone
again in my bed at late night,
My
mind has gone on yet another flight.
Away
it has gone to the place of our first meet.
The
time and the air were so very kind and sweet.
Fresh
the dawn of ruthless cruelty springs,
And
from it comes that fearful death sting.
How
sweet you were and tender to touch:
That
smile and calm voice--Oh so much.
Gentle
you were, fairer than many placid seas.
How
can the innocent hide from the stalking eyes?
Where
can one go from those who hunt in captious guise?
Then
from the shadow comes that feared strike,
And--Oh--on
the heart it will so terribly bite.
You
were once all mine, but now only a dream.
To
think about you is too much--I must scream.
And
as the innocent crumbles from a dearth of support,
The
slayer smiles and gather again his ugly comport.
So
how can two, so far away, continue to seek the other's best?
Can
it be that time itself is below honest, youthful, noble zest?
